With her Wet Works Series, Donna Cohen Lane returns to her roots as an Abstract Expressionist with original "genesis" fragments of watercolor and acrylic on Bristol Board, macro-captured while wet and then expanded into high-resolution ink on heavy watercolor paper 43" X 30" (ranging from individual vertical to individual horizontal to single-sheet triptychs).
The Wet Works paintings are highly defined, carefully composed, and insidiously colorful mixed-media pieces that exist only for a moment but which Donna is able to capture for all time. The pieces reflect Donna's love and celebration of paint's hydrodynamics, and the inverse projections we find in the abstract. The works cover a wide palette of hue and movement. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, signed by the artist, accompanied by the authenticated pentimento "genesis” from which that piece grew.
Donna studied at the Arts Student League in Manhattan, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the School of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University (earning a BFA in Experimental Studios).
After early-career exhibitions of abstract expressionism in a range of drawn, brushed, etched, and carved materials, Donna continued to paint while she raised a family and enjoyed a 30 year ahead-of-the-state-of-the-art professional life as a Digital Media Entertainment Designer, Innovator, Producer, Studio Executive, and Consultant, delivering many firsts to the entertainment industry.
Expanding her reach as an artist Donna recently completed a year long project of illustrating a book that will be published late summer. The 60 full page color images are an example of her depth and facility as an artist, each image exudes love and intense emotion. The dynamic, diverse, and colorful images amplify the text in a wonderful and intensely expressive way. Many of the images will be available for sale.
On the teaching side, Donna notably created and ran the Computer Graphics Program at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, and presently teaches New Media, the History of Broadcasting, Building an On-Line Audience, and Special Projects at California State University Long Beach.
Donna's Wet Works Paintings have been in public exhibitions, galleries and are several private collection.
Donna paints in her studio in the Hollywood Hills, hiding out from her husband, teenage daughter, four dogs and seven turtles.
